‘…hold the roots…’

Kievan Rus viking hair or clothing pin

A remarkably well crafted and well preservated hair or clothes pin.

This was found near Kiev in Ukrain. The hairpin itself has a length of 88 mm, including decoration at its longest point 94 mm. The animal figure measures 10 mm in length and 20 mm in width. The hairpin with decoration weighs 8.94 grams. The various chain ornaments were not only for decoration. It is known that people believed that the rustling sound they made when they were walked with, would keep evil spirits at bay. The many ‘duck foot’ pendants/amulets that have been found are evidence of this.
